Profile

The Tairawhiti Museum has a reputation as one of the very best most innovative regional museums in New Zealand. In recent years we have undergone significant change including major building extensions, redevelopment of all exhibition spaces, and the establishment of a broadly representative Board of Trustees.

Our vision is to become an integral part of the community of the Tairawhiti through building strong and enduring relationships with community groups. Our role extends beyond our own four walls to the most remote parts of the region.

The following is a list of some of our more significant achievements in recent years;

  • Completion of Te Moana Maritime Museum and refurbishment of historic buildings
  • Signing of C.Company agreement and construction of new C.Company gallery
  • Establishment of outreach Education Service
  • Development of new constitution and Board of Trustees
  • Tourism surveys finding the museum the most popular tourist attraction in the region
  • Winning the inaugural Supreme Tourism Award
  • Rebranding and renaming of the organization
  • Hosting very successful Maori cultural festivals
  • Hosting of Prime Minister Helen Clark
