WWII nurse’s cape, early 1940s, donated by Mr Paul Lovelight, 1997.125.2
This cape belonged to a nurse for VAD (Voluntary Aid Division), St John's Ambulance Brigade during WWII. Uniform was a significant part of daily dress for many women in the 1940s and their contribution to the war effort was reflected in their everyday attire. It is made of serviceable grey wool and was created especially for the ambulance service by C Smith Ltd, Wellington. When worn, glimmers of the bright red lining would have been visible.
