Dress, 1960s, donated by Mrs Margaret Mettner, 1983.17.d
The simple shift dress became an iconic 1960s garment, worn in bright, bold colours, sometimes with a geometric design. Pantyhose were developed just in time for the creation of dresses like this one, since the old garter belts showed below the hem!
This dress was sent to Gisborne from California and was worn second-hand by the donor. Originally from America, Margaret has been a long-time, passionate advocate of both the museum and local arts.
