An iron rock from space was found in farm sheep yards at Waingaromia, 20 kilometres Northwest of Tolaga Bay.

Mr A Hedley Reeves' 1915 discovery was unannounced until 1970. A newspaper article heralding the discovery of the fifth ever meteorite to be found in New Zealand prompted Reeves to have the 9.2 kilogram ‘rusty rock’ investigated.

Experts from Canterbury Museum confirmed the Waingaromia Meteorite (meteorites are named after the place they are found) as the sixth meteorite found in New Zealand and the second heaviest.
